Tiles project

This project involved the students designing and making their own ceramic tiles.

This project was designed to take learners through a 3 stage process in order to enable them to record it whilst observing the development of the results through a variety of approaches.

Stage 1 of this project involved glazing the tile with a ceramic glaze mix using an airbrush. In this case we used a 1/4 mix of colour (this changes dependant on the various materials you can use and the glazes and effect you wish to acheive) which is then allowed to dry naturally.

Following this a design can carefully be etched into the tile before it goes to the kiln.

Stage 2 involved coming up with a design that would be sent to the screen printing department for a photographic screen image. From this screen the over lay image would be put on transfer paper that could be rubbed onto the surface of the tile. The tile then goes to the kiln for this to be baked on.

Stage 3 involved using colour transfers to enahance and add dynamics to the existing image and in some cases worked better the other way round. Each stage involves a kiln process.
