January 2009
As part of our involvement with the wider arts community Pelham arts have offered their services to the Hastings arts Forum. Pelham arts are currently acting in an advisory capacity and helping to establish the future of an organisation that has to some extent been struggling for some time.
Our involvement is in a business capacity, trying to establish working documents for its future and organising an EGM for the members, which is taking place at the Azur, Marina on 26th January 2009. Following this we will provide our support if necessary up until and after the AGM has been carried out sometime in April.
We have retained a list of artists names and contact details who exhibited at St Mary in the Castle whilst Pelham Arts was located there. We would ask that if you wish to be removed from this list or have no interest in receiving updates in the future please use our

Pelham Arts fashion workshops 30 October - 1 November 2008
On 30 October - 1 November 2008 we ran fashion workshops at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill on sea for 3 days The project was organised by Access all areas as part of the Youth Arts Festival which has taken place for the last 3 years. As part in the programme of events for young people we came up with a project that enabled young people to create customized clothing and fashion from recycled materials. As a finale to this fantastic event we organised a fashion cat walk show from all the creations made. This was filmed on the famous staircase of this historical building, making it a very memorable occasion for us....
To say that the workshops were a success would be an understatement. In fact the workshops couldn't take enough of the willing participants that wanted to take part. We had to work flat out from conception to completion to maximise the enjoyment that was to be attained from it.
We were able to enlist the support of local shops who gave their encouragement not only to the event but to our intentions of holding successful workshops at all. On this note we would like to thank Debenhams of Hastings for allowing us to use their mannequins, and to ESK who donated art materials and the use of clothing rails. All of this proved invaluable to the professionalism of the event we held.
We have since enlisted the employ of a resource manager, Mark, to whom we also owe thanks for his unwavered support in getting us the materials and donations that we were given.
As a result we are now able to announce that all fashion workshops in the future will be carried out by 'A right outfit' who are part of the Pelham Arts organisation.
Here are some of the comments from the exhibitions that we held during our time at St Mary in the Castle.
‘Very well presented, wide variety of lovely paintings, beautifully laid out, dynamic, great displays of local talent, a raging success, delightful experience, really interesting, superb exhibition in every way, highly skilled, great standard, stylish, look forward to more'.
Pelham Arts has now been reformed since our last exhibition ‘Would You Adam and Eve It’ which we held in December 2007 at St Mary in the Castle, Hastings. The new Pelham Arts is now in continuation with Cheryl Grindle (director) and Wendy Lee (secretary). At present we haven’t made any plans to appoint a new committee.
Would you Adam and Eve It - December 2007
There had been some local contraversy as to whether or not Pelham arts would be able to show an exhibition of nudity in the gallery. This was due to the fact that the leaseholder of St Mary in the Castle was run by a Christian organisation. In our efforts to put the St Mary in the Castle gallery back on the map we negotiated an arrangement with the church and the exhibition was allowed to go ahead.
We were able to involve the Rye society of artists who supported us in enabling the exhibition to go ahead. We are grateful to all members of the Rye society of artists who took part in this show, and all Hastings artists that exhibited despite the possibility of being reprimanded for it.
We managed to show a total of 72 paintings and drawings and the exhibition was a success.
Although numbers were light at the opening private view we saw approximately 300 visitors during the exhibition and made an impressive 16 sales in total.
Heritage Hastings - October 2007
The public of Hastings has now seen its first display of local art at the new Pelham Arts gallery in St Mary in the Castle, which coincided with the events of Hastings Week.
Heritage Hastings saw an audience of nearly 200 visitors at the private view on 5th October 2007. We managed to host the work of 52 local artists and approximately 150 paintings. This was an enormous task and was put up on a voluntary basis.
The exhibition was extended to encourage a warm welcome to visitors who came from all over the country to attend the Seaside Heritage conference at St Mary's on 16-17th October.
‘Heritage Hastings’ gave the artists of Hastings an opportunity to express clearly what they value about their town whilst providing a host of local talent at the Seaside Heritage conference that took place there. The organisers and several delegates of this event were very grateful to the committee for their efforts in putting up such a great show and asked that their gratitude be extended to all those involved in making our first exhibition such a huge success.
Following the success of this we are pleased to announce our forthcoming show.
"Would you Adam and Eve it" is aimed at encouraging all those artists with an interest in portraying the human form. We are looking for a variety of media. The exhibition will start with the private view on 23rd November 7-9pm, by invitation only, and will run until 7th December 2007.
Submission date for entries is 16th November 5-8pm.
We would ask that all exhibitors endeavour to adhere to set dates and times, as we are a small committee and giving up much of our time and energy to do this.
The opening hours of the exhibition will be 10-5pm Monday - Saturday.
P.A.A.C (Pelham Arts advisory committee) have been given a great opportunity to raise the awareness of local art to the community. Our aims are to operate a gallery that works for all those with an interest in using and visiting the gallery. We are grateful for advice and suggestions for the development of Pelham Arts. We will also welcome any support that can be offered.
Pelham Arts - August 2007
The public can now look forward to the reopening of the new gallery at St Mary in the castle, to be run by Pelham Arts.
This is a very exciting time for Hastings seeing the opening of Heritage Hastings on Friday October 5th 7.30-9.30 at the commencement of Hastings Week.
The show promises a varied and vibrant display of local artwork depicting local and historic scenes.
Following this the gallery space will host a show for English Heritage 16th-17th October.
The gallery developments are in their infancy but hopes to host a venue for local artists to hold workshops and a space to exhibit their displays.
