Pelham Arts Exhibitions

Here are some of the comments from the exhibitions that we held during our time at St Mary in the Castle.

‘Very well presented, wide variety of lovely paintings, beautifully laid out, dynamic, great displays of local talent, a raging success, delightful experience, really interesting, superb exhibition in every way, highly skilled, great standard, stylish, look forward to more'.

Would you Adam and Eve It - December 2007

There had been some local contraversy as to whether or not Pelham arts would be able to show an exhibition of nudity in the gallery. This was due to the fact that the leaseholder of St Mary in the Castle was run by a Christian organisation. In our efforts to put the St Mary in the Castle gallery back on the map we negotiated an arrangement with the church and the exhibition was allowed to go ahead.

We were able to involve the Rye society of artists who supported us in enabling the exhibition to go ahead. We are grateful to all members of the Rye society of artists who took part in this show, and all Hastings artists that exhibited despite the possibility of being reprimanded for it.

We managed to show a total of 72 paintings and drawings and the exhibition was a success.

Although numbers were light at the opening private view we saw approximately 300 visitors during the exhibition and made an impressive 16 sales in total.

Heritage Hastings - October 2007

The public of Hastings has now seen its first display of local art at the new Pelham Arts gallery in St Mary in the Castle, which coincided with the events of Hastings Week.

Heritage Hastings saw an audience of nearly 200 visitors at the private view on 5th October 2007. We managed to host the work of 52 local artists and approximately 150 paintings. This was an enormous task and was put up on a voluntary basis.

The exhibition was extended to encourage a warm welcome to visitors who came from all over the country to attend the Seaside Heritage conference at St Mary's on 16-17th October.

‘Heritage Hastings’ gave the artists of Hastings an opportunity to express clearly what they value about their town whilst providing a host of local talent at the Seaside Heritage conference that took place there. The organisers and several delegates of this event were very grateful to the committee for their efforts in putting up such a great show and asked that their gratitude be extended to all those involved in making our first exhibition such a huge success.
